wow,, thank you so much. very well said.

we are still the ones 'on trial' when issues like this come to light. It's easier to come forward when you realize you weren't the only one rather than being the first. there's strength in numbers.

we should know better about living with any sort of abuse. we start off embarrassed that we fell for it or fell for someone capable of it. but after a while, when you've lived under any type of abuse for a period of time, you are degraded to the point you don't believe you can make it without the abuser... make it on your own. you battle you own self worth.

we put our own expectations on ourselves. You survived, I survived. No one needs to survive abuse... but it makes us who we are today so hopefully we can reach someone to give them the strength to get away or to take a higher road before it goes too far.

I remember this day so well, and it still breaks my heart that I was too young and too stupid to even remotely know how to help you deal with it. And that you were at my house when it happened. Like you though, I've always tried to use this memory to help my students who find themselves in this situation. We all just muddle along, I guess.

Whenever I happen to flip to a channel playing an old western I'll stop and watch for a minute or the whole movie and remember sitting with my grandfather in his living room. Those are good memories and this little thing keeps them alive.

Who the heck is ever going to look back at their life and wonder why they didn't work more instead of being with friends, family, or taking a break just for themselves? Life is short and I don't want to have any more regrets than I already do. Erma Bombeck wrote a more general, but similarly themed essay I think.
